What are tongue twisters?

The tongue twister is a phrase or sentence which is hard to speak fast, usually because of alliteration or a sequence of nearly similar sounds. It helps develop speech skills & helps in speech therapy for the kid and adult actors with speech difficulties. To get the full effect of a tongue twister you should try to repeat it several times, as quickly as possible, without stumbling or mispronouncing.

Tongue twisters are great for helping kids concentrate on working all their speech variation and voice articulation muscles.



And they’re just plain fun.


I've compiled below a list of some of my favorite that you can help your child to improve speech, voice, articulation and dialog delivery

How can you help your child to practice tongue twisters?

Before the practice

A.
Before practice and introducing tongue twisters ask your kid to crinkle their face as tiny as possible for 5 seconds.
Then to make their face as big as possible for 5 seconds.

B.
Then introduce the tongue twister and make your child initially speak slowly then loudly increasing the repetition speed of a tongue twister

C.
Make sure you encourage them to use a “stage voice” as if they have a listening audience in their school auditorium of a large number of people.

D.
Another great variation is to have to say the tongue twister in a different emotion. (Angry, sad, happy, scared, frustrated, confused, etc.)  Or, to challenge the child to begin happily but gradually get progressively more and angrier and then sad.

With show business becoming a global industry, there has been a constant demand for actors. The obvious impact is that there has also been a considerable increase in the demand for child actors, who seem to be giving the producers a good run for their money. 1. Observe, Dream and Learn: 

Let him/her observe people, animals, birds, stars or anything. Focus and remember the details-looks, walk movements, shape and then make stories and then narrate stories by showing/ acting them

2. Watching Movies

Let your child see various popular child movies and dramas. Make them observe and understand for themselves how a renowned actor portrays a particular character, how he displays a particular emotion, and what response he gets for the same from his audience. The quality and quantity of knowledge that a child would grasp just by observing others will be far greater than an adult, for sure.

3. Reading Stories

Let the kid read interesting stories LOUDLY- fairy tales,the  prince and princess stories, adventure, humorous etc. This will definitely develop the child’s power of imagination

4. Join some good  child acting coach:

This will help him/her to become familiar with the basics and the finer aspects of acting, technical aspects of acting for the camera and will actually give them a cutting-edge over the others.

5. Practice and Rehearse: 

To practice regularly and rehearsal is a very important aspect of acting. There is no actor in the world who has achieved name and fame without practicing and doing rehearsals repeatedly and religiously. Make the kids learn their dialogs properly, and make them understand the demand of the character they are playing. If they succeed in understanding the character, only then would they be able to do justice to the role they are playing.
As parents this is how you can help in his/her development
For instance, if your child's role in a play is that of a shy child, make up a story where he plays the shy child and feeling out of the place and “you” play the role of the talkative child at a party. Create certain dialogs for both, the kid as well you as the “characters” of small story you have created. Practicing in this way will help your kid understand the way he has to act for his role. Rehearsal, both individually and along with the rest of the cast, plays an important role. Individually, a child can be asked to rehearse before a mirror so that he himself can critically examine his work and make the necessary improvements. He can then rehearse with the rest of the cast so that the play becomes a well-coordinated whole.

6. Quality of Voice and Projection: 

If your kid gets a part to play in a drama, it is important that he learns to speak loudly so that the audience can hear him clearly.
Speaking clearly and cleanly is important. Give your child a one or two line dialog and let the child speak normally. Then increase the speed and then go about lowering the speed. Ensure that pronunciation and diction is correct
Of course, the child’s coach will teach him/her various voice exercises.

Acting tends to get more and more refined with experience. An actor can learn a great deal of things through his or her mistakes, and it is these mistakes which make the person better each day. For kids who are talented actors, starting their careers with stage/theater performances can provide a great boost. This is because, stage performances not only makes the actor more confident, but also adds spontaneity to his work, which further helps him in other media as well.

I must stress the need of joining a good kid acting school or better, to hire an acting coach.  However, if a kid can not join due to some reason or another, then read this and other posts of this blog and practice

Who is a kid actor?

A kid actor is one who plays a role of an imaginary dramatic character. This kid actor has traits of dreaming a lot, creates and plays with imaginary stories and toys himself/herself becoming a character of the story/play.
So, a kid should observe and understand everything about different types of kid characters he/she sees around him/her

Observation

This is my favorite because it’s easy. You do not need a rehearsal space, special equipment, or a dedicated time.

How to play diverse "Characters" you observe?

From today itself, start watching other kids and adults as well. When you are walking on a road, traveling in a bus to school or on a train, observe people-kids, old, young,  physically handicapped, girls, everybody very carefully. Observe how they walk, talk,  gestures, their voices, and accent, attitudes (shy, aggressive, sad, loud, naughty, etc., emotions expressed,  physical profile (height, weight, body shape like thin or fat and remember each one in your memory (Mind). If possible, write down in the evening, the types you have observed during the day. The best for a kid to be an actor is to start observing other kids /people at home, in the neighborhood and his/her class, even his/her teachers
Now start practicing the observed character. Don't mimic (copy), but maintain what you are naturally and then try to be that "observed" character

Create a story

1. As you observe a character, ask questions to yourself-Who could be this Motu or Chotu (Pseudo name given by you to this "observed character)? Does Motu/ Chotu have parents, friends, brothers and sisters? Where is he/she going now? What is the biggest problem he/she has to solve? What is he/she dreaming about?

2. Now create a game, a sort of story-If you would dramatize the observed character's life, what type of film would it be? A story full of quarrel and fights? A story with a wild dream? A funny story? A ghost story/ Why? Imagine and create a scene with him/her. Imagine the way he/she talks. Go in your mind as detailed as you can.

3. Now you also become a part of that story you have created. Decide your part and JUST PLAY!

4.  Let parents or your friend record this story on mobile video recorder. Show this recording to others and seek their opinion. Look at the video and check whether your images, movements, your voice is okay in relation to the camera. Check if your face is being shown properly on the video. If not, then re-record.

5. Practice playing different observed characters daily.
